Sam Cooper, artist and ACT UP activist, is stuck somewhere between anger and depression as he continues to mourn the loss of his lover during the dark days of the AIDS pandemic more than two decades earlier. Between infrequent, and sometimes tense, gatherings with his friends, Sam fills his time working on a seemingly endless video project, smoking cigarettes, and searching for casual hookups. One night in a bar, he meets the seductive Braeden, a handsome younger man, who is drawn into Sam’s orbit and bed. Though Sam doesn’t understand members of the younger, carefree generation, who seem politically indifferent, their unusual relationship blossoms, reawakening Sam’s artistic soul and reviving his wilted heart.
Directed by activist and artist Vincent Gagliostro, After Louie is a heartfelt intergenerational drama that features terrific performances, particularly from Alan Cumming as Sam and Zachary Booth as Braeden, among an engaging cast of supporting characters.
