Todrick Hall may soon be the first African American, gay, EGOT winner. He’s a YouTube sensation with 2.5 million subscribers, and his videos have accumulated more than 400 million views. He writes, composes, sings, choreographs, dances, and directs all of his performances. His flash mob in Target earned him a tweet from Beyoncé, and since 2016, he has been a guest judge on RuPaul’s Drag Race.
Behind the Curtain: Todrick Hall follows Hall and his crew for the busy few weeks as they construct and produce his 2016 Straight Outta Oz album, videos, and tour. The documentary reveals Hall’s drive and creativity; he can write a song just a few hours before his loyal entourage must learn the choreography and his volunteer fans, recruited from the Interwebs, are scheduled to build the set. Wayne Brady, Jordin Sparks, Bob the Drag Queen, and other stars and fierce queens are featured in cameos, but the interactions with his fans, the “Toddlerz”—whether at a meet and greet or Walmart—reveal Hall’s endless charisma, uniqueness, bravado, and talent.
Director Katherine Fairfax Wright’s film will move and thoroughly entertain you with its soulful baritenor, sweet falsetto, intense rap, and energetic dancing as it brings you Todrick Hall’s inspiring story.
