Teo Almanza (Luis Fernández) has everything. He is a successful law professor with a beautiful wife and two children. The only problem is that he is in the wrong body. Ever since he was young, he has wanted to be a woman, a person that everyone from his wife to random students refuses to let him become. This challenging biopic follows the transformation of a Venezuelan trans woman and the unaccommodating culture determined to deny her deepest wish.
Teo returns home to her mother in Venezuela after her cross-dressing alienates her from her family. The frustrating realization that her desires will never be accepted forces her to conform, get married, have kids, and live her life as a lie. But eventually her desires become too much for her to deal with, and she courageously decides to begin the long and hard process of surgery and hormonal therapy and confront the opposition from the family and society that surround her.
Elia Schneider’s Tamara takes you through every rude comment, every disgusted look that Teo experiences in her transformation. The frustration caused by Tamara’s ostracism, the struggle between those who do and don’t accept her, and Tamara’s own understanding of her decision create an empathetic peek at just how difficult it is to change the body you are stuck with and become the person you need to be.
