The 2008 presidential election in Ghana, West Africa, serves as the backdrop of this real-life political thriller, in which two political parties compete to lead a third world democracy struggling for legitimization. An African Election takes a behind-the-scenes look at political electioneering, creating a portrait of the larger-than-life politicians, party organizers and Ghanaian citizens in a hotly contended election. John Atta Mills, the winner of the election, passed away this summer after a battle with cancer.
