Through archival footage and first person interviews, Dateline – Saigon profiles five Pulitzer Prize-winning journalists – The New York Times’ David Halberstam; UPI’s Neil Sheehan; and AP’s Malcolm Browne, Peter Arnett, and the legendary photojournalist Horst Faas. The film chronicles their controversial and groundbreaking reporting during the early years of the Vietnam War (1961-1963) as the learned early-on that the facts they discover on the ground bear little resemblance to what President Kennedy and his advisors are telling the American public. This film is a fascinating look how the experiences and actions of these five journalists set the precedent for modern, front-line war reporting.
