David has always known his father as a cold and methodological man – a kind of person who never shows love, vulnerability, or tenderness to his family and his own children. Yet, after his father’s death, David is confronted by a mysterious box full of love letters from another man addressed to his father. Baffled by this finding, David seeks out Juan – the seemingly secret past lover of his father and is determined to learn the truth. The two couldn’t be more different from each other – David is as methodological as his father, while Juan is an eccentric passionate drag queen. David tries to understand how his cold-hearted father could have fallen for such a person, while Juan sees how David is being overshadowed by his father’s unloving past. Over the course of several conversations, their personalities clash with each other, eventually leading them to face their own insecurities and longing that they both projected onto David’s father.
The subtle storytelling, the nuanced simplicity of the theatrics, and the gentle yet intense tension in the dialogue between these two characters contribute to an intriguing and heartfelt reflection of both of them. Palpable and honest, nothing about this film is emotionally manipulative towards the viewers, and yet, you will be compelled to enjoy and savor every moment.
