Presented as part of the annual Utah Humanities Book Festival, FREAKS is a classic horror film that features authentic circus folk in a “Greek tragedy” set in a sideshow.
Following the film, University of Utah professor Angela Smith, author of the recently released book titled Hideous Progeny: Disability, Eugenics and Classic Horror Cinema, will present a short lecture on how early Hollywood horror films – with FREAKS as the focal point – exploited the fears and yearnings of their audience by playing up the artifice and conventions of disabled “monsters”. Copies of the book will be on sale and Professor Smith will be available for book signings.
