Through The Lens – Peek Award Presentation
**Sam Berns will be joining us via Skype to accept the annual Peek Award for Disability in Film.
Dr. Scott Berns and director Andrea Nix Fine will be in attendance for a Q+A moderated by Doug Fabrizio, host of RadioWest.
At the age of two, Sam Berns was diagnosed with Progeria, a progressive aging disorder so rare that fewer than 250 children in the world have it. The life expectancy of affected children is only 13 years. Sam’s parents, Drs. Leslie Gordon and Scott Berns, were told that there was no treatment or cure. Life According to Sam reveals the remarkable world of Sam Berns set against the backdrop of his parents’ relentless pursuit of a treatment and cure for Progeria, including launching the first-ever clinical drug trial, while also making the most of their time together as a family.
The Peek Award
The Peek Award for Disability in Film celebrates the legacy of Kim Peek, which honors a subject, director, or actor in a film who embodies the dynamism of Rain Man and Kim Peek. The Peek Award generates awareness about artists and media makers who are positively impacting our society’s perception of persons with disabilities, while celebrating the extraordinary unsung heroes in our own disability community.
