As part of the monthly Through The Lens film series, Utah Film Center and KUER’s RadioWest present a screening of THE CRASH REEL, a feature-length documentary directed by two-time Academy Award-nominee Lucy Walker about U.S. champion snowboarder Kevin Pearce that recently premiered at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival. The screening will be held on Wednesday, March 13 at 7:00 pm simultaneously at six venues across the Wasatch Front.
THE CRASH REEL follows pro snowboarder Kevin Pearce using years of vérité footage to expose the potentially high price of participating in extreme- action sports. Training to compete against longtime rival Shaun White at the 2010 Winter Olympics, Kevin suffered massive head trauma from a 2009 accident in Park City, Utah. His tight-knit Vermont family flew to his side, and together they began an intensive process of trying to rehabilitate him and help him rebuild his damaged life. Kevin’s determination and the tireless support of family and friends kept him focused on recovery. But when he insisted he wanted to return to the sport he loved, his family objected. As an elite athlete, Kevin was a professional risk taker, but as a brain-injury survivor, his skills were now impaired, and even a small blow to the head could kill him.
In SLC, director Lucy Walker will join us via Skype for a post-film q+a moderated by RadioWest’s Doug Fabrizio.
In Park City there will be a post screening discussion featuring Trace Worthington (Olympian and former Freestyle SKiing World Champion), Dr. Holly Ledyard (University of Utah Clinical Neurosciences Center), and Tracy Meier (National Ability Center).
In Ogden, Jennifer Jordan will moderate a discussion featuring Dr. Francis X. Yubero
(Board-Certified American Board of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation) and Julie McCauley (Clinical therapist for the Veterans Hospital + on the Board of Directors of the Brain Injury Alliance of Utah).
Through The Lens is monthly screening series presented by the Utah Film Center and KUER’s RadioWest. In addition to the screening, RadioWest profiles the filmmaker or subject of the film in a radio interview in advance of the film. Check radiowest.kuer.org for an up-to-date schedule.
