Writer, director, and lead Molly Hewitt renders a glittering, zany, hilarious yet thoughtful debut feature in Holy Trinity. Set in an alternate universe of ubiquitous glamour and unruly fluidity, this film tells the unlikely story of a dominatrix turned medium. After a holy experience huffing her roommate’s aerosol air freshener, Trinity is inundated with communications from those beyond the grave. Lost in a new and macabre space and unable to reverse the effects of the mysterious drug, Trinity is forced to figure out how to balance the voices in her life and in her mind. Searching for answers and a set of best practices in this uncharted terririty, Trinity engages a motley crew of guides, splashing hilarious conversations and colorful characters across the screen. As she finds her footing in her new reality – which blends the real, the imagined, and the dead – she gains popularity and requests to reach late loved ones pile up on her plate. Eventually driven to neglect her lover, Baby (Theo Germaine), and friends in pursuit of fame, fate, and faith, Trinity must reckon with her own demons to make things right. The entire film plays out on a raucous stage, blending a vibrant camp aesthetic with a buoyant production design. An inclusive cast delivers hilarious and cheeky performances that offer consistent fanfare and relief. Tackling themes of relationship, community, spirituality, and influence all with a healthy dose of humor and the bizarre, Holy Trinity succeeds with a flourish of glitter and glam.
